School profile

The aim of our school is to provide our pupils with the necessary skills needed both in their further education and in their everyday lives. We will give every pupil a safe working environment within which everyone is encouraged to achieve his/her full academic and social potential.

Student welfare

All our pupils have a network of support around them. There is a special student welfare group, which meets regularly to discuss the acute problems of any student. This group consists of the school psychologist, the school social worker, the special education teacher, the school nurse, the headmaster and the careers counsellor. Each pupil has access to the services of the school psychologist or the school social worker free of charge. The appointments can be arranged by the school or by the parents and they can be held at school or at the school office.

School health service

The school nurse makes a thorough health examination for all the pupils in classes 4,5,7 and 8. In addition there is a school doctor's examination for classes 2, 6 and 9. Any pupil can visit the school nurse's reception if he/she has an acute health problem. All the pupils have a free dental care. The appointments are made at regular intervals depending on the needs of each pupil. All the emergencies are dealt with as soon as possible.

Peer counselling

The pupils in classes 7 - 10 elect among themselves a group of peer counsellors. These pupils are committed to improving the school atmosphere by organizing various events and campaigns during the school year and giving support and help to those in need of a friend.

Student body

All the pupils in classes 7 - 10 belong to the student body. Each class elects a chairperson who represents the class in the student body. Every autumn the student body elects its chairperson and secretary for the coming school year. The student body works together with the teaching staff to develop the school and promote the aims defined in the school profile.

School library

The school library is open throughout the school day and can be visited under the supervision of the group's teacher. The vast majority of the books are nonfiction books to help the pupils with their assignments and group works.

Special education

There are one special education teachers in Neulamäki school for classes 1 - 10. Pupils with special educational needs can be taught individually or in small groups in the subject they have problems with. The special education teacher can also work together with the subject teacher helping certain pupils in the classroom during the lessons. There is also a separate special education class with ten pupils at the most. The pupils are placed in this special education class due to various difficulties in school achievement. Every pupil is also entitled to get remedial instruction when needed. If the teacher or the parents feel that there is an urgent need for remedial education it can be arranged with the special education teacher or the subject teacher.

Careers counselling

• There is a careers counsellor available at school every day. The work includes:
• giving information and counselling on the elective subjects
• giving lessons in careers counselling
• guiding the pupils in making their further education plans
• helping the pupils to develop their skills in studying
• arranging a work experience placement for the 9th graders
