UNICEF Walk
Imagine that you have a perfect day at your work. Everything goes like in a dream and everybody has a good time. And at the same time when you are having fun by walking and enjoying the nature you can help the world to become a better place to live. We had a such day in our school. That day we had our UNICEF Walk.
UNICEF Walks started in the year 1999. Since then the Walks have been a great successes all over the Finland. Unicef Walk joins together students, parents, grandparents and all interested people.

Children show their UNICEF Walk passes.

Over 100,000 Finnish children and young people help their counterparts in developing countries through UNICEF action each year. The most popular activity is the UNICEF Walk, which is an event for schools combining sports, education and fundraising. The idea is to find sponsors who donate to UNICEF according to the distance completed - so the further you go, the more your sponsors donate!
On September 25, 2009 we had our UNICEF Walk. Our goal was to spend another kind of a sports day than we usually have had. The purpose; meaning was that now the kids would not compete against each other. They would compete only to get a best personal result by walking so many kilometers that they could in about 2 hours time.
The walking route was 3.2 km and kids walked between 2 - 4 rounds and the best result was over 14 km. Each kid had a passport in which they could get stickers as many as they had walked kilometers.
Before the walk they had to get a sponsor (parents, grandparents, uncle etc..) who then after the walk would give so many Euros as they had stickers in their passport. For example 1€ / km or even more 2-3€ / km. The highest single donation to Unicef on that day was 50€ !
Same time as the grades between 1 - 6 walked their route at Neulamäki sports path, also grades 7 - 9 walked their way elsewhere out in the town. They had about 7 km route to walk and they also had lessons and tasks before and after the walk. Their donations went to Unicef Stop Aids campaingn.
In short: Our this year's sports day was a success with hundred's of smiling faces, good feelings and happy people. Together our school's donation was 1800€ to Unicef.
